Ultrasound, also called ultrasonography, of the abdomen and pelvic allows to visualize the organs of your abdomen and pelvic, namely: the liver, the gallbladder, the kidneys, the bladder, the uterus, the ovaries, the prostate and seminal vesicles.

What is the purpose of an abdominal and pelvic ultrasound?

Like any ultrasound, the exam does not use x-rays and can be used to:

diagnose a disease (search for tumors and infection, exploration of an inflammatory syndrome)

follow the evolution of a pathology (cancer monitoring) 

follow the growth and study the proper development of the organs of the fetus during pregnancy 

guide a surgeon through certain surgical procedures

Exam preparation (for adults)

Fasting for ultrasound examinations of the abdomen and pelvis, as well as for the Doppler study of the intra-abdominal vessels and in particular of the renal arteries.

To properly prepare for your abdominal and pelvic ultrasound, you must:

be fasting 4 to 6 hours before the exam

don't chew gum

have finished drinking 4 8-ounce (960 ml) glasses of water 75 minutes before the exam

It is important not to urinate before your appointment.

Steps to follow

Here are the steps to follow to prepare for the exam:

If your exam takes place in the morning

We will ask you:

not to eat any solid or liquid food after midnight

to take your medications if they are essential

not to chew gum

Make sure you have finished drinking 4 8-ounce (960 ml) glasses of water 75 minutes before the exam. It is important not to urinate (your bladder must be full when you arrive at the appointment)

If your exam takes place after 1 p.m.:

We will ask you:

not to eat solid or liquid food 4 to 6 hours before the examination

to take your medications if they are essential

not to eat fatty food in the morning (muffins, eggs, cheese, sausage, bacon, butter or margarine). You can eat, for example, a portion of oatmeal with fruit and bread, or any other equivalent food

Make sure you have finished drinking 4 8-ounce (960 ml) glasses of water 75 minutes before the exam. It is important not to urinate (your bladder must be full when you arrive at the appointment)

Preparation for the exam (for children)

Newborn to 2 years old: 4 hours on an empty stomach and drink 2 hours before.

3 to 13 years old: 4 to 6 hours on an empty stomach, do not empty the bladder before the exam and drink 15 ounces of water (450 ml) approximately 30 to 60 minutes before the exam (varies according to the child ).

14 years and over: consult the preparation section for the exam for adults
