Why can my doctor order this type of examination?

The reasons are the exploration of your intervertebral discs, your spinal cord as well as your spinal nerves to allow the detection of :

a herniated disc

a fracture of a vertebra

vertebral bone metastases

inflammatory rheumatism



The procedure of the exam

Here is the procedure, we will ask you :

Put on a gown and remove your jewelry and any metal objects that could interfere with the quality of the images

lie down comfortably on a table and remain still. The table will slide into the CT machine

Hold your breath for a few seconds to perform the procedure. Please note that we will capture the images very quickly to minimize the radiation dose you will receive.

Depending on the type of examination prescribed by your health care professional, you may be injected with a contrast material. The list of these agents will be indicated to you when you make your appointment. If you think you may be allergic, please inform the technologist.

In order to accommodate you, please note that the total time of your visit may vary between 30 and 60 minutes, although the actual exam will only last between 10 and 25 minutes.

A medial order is required to perform this examination.

 Preparing for the exam

To prepare for the exam, we ask that you fast at least 4 hours before your exam (unless otherwise advised). However, it is possible to take your medication with a little water.
