Why can my doctor prescribe this type of examination? 

The reasons are varied and will be used to detect :

traumatic lesions in your liver, spleen, kidneys, pancreas (abscess, primary or secondary tumor) and organs in the pelvic area

thickening of the wall of your small and large intestine which may indicate inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, diverticulitis)

vascular lesions (abdominal aortic dissection and aneurysm, thrombosis of the superior mesenteric artery)

The procedure of the exam

Here is the procedure, we will ask you :

put on a gown and remove your jewelry and any metal objects that could affect the quality of the images

avoid eating a large meal, a light meal is allowed (toast with jam, cereal or soup) before any type of CT scan.

Depending on the type of examination prescribed by your health care professional, you may be injected with a contrast agent. A list of these agents will be given to you when you make your appointment. If you think you may be allergic, please inform the technologist.

In order to accommodate you, please note that the total time of your visit may vary between 30 and 60 minutes, although the actual exam will only last between 10 and 25 minutes.

A medial order is required to perform this examination.

Possible side effects of the exam

Our radiologists and technologists will look after your well-being throughout the examination and will be there to help you and answer your questions.

Depending on the examination prescribed by your health care professional, you may be injected with a contrast agent. The list of these agents will be indicated to you when you make your appointment. If you think you may be allergic, please notify our technologist.

It is important to note that approximately 5% of people react to the contrast material. Should this occur, our technologists will be on hand to quickly address the symptoms. Symptoms may include the following:

nausea

breathing difficulties

metallic or bitter taste in the mouth

hot flashes

facial swelling and itching

in very rare cases, the contrast material could also cause a severe allergic reaction
